Artist Statement

Allen Cruz is an independent designer and visual artist based in Tio'tia / Mooniyang / Montréal. His multidisciplinary practice, with a focus on typography, spans print, publishing, and digital design, engaging with the intersections of art and culture.

Cruz views design as a bridge between cultural identities and uses typography as a tool for constructing shared meaning. Rooted in his hybrid Dominican-Canadian identity, his work responds to the evolving realities of social and cultural landscapes.

Cruz holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a specialization in Design and Art from Concordia University. In 2023, he participated in the Nicho program—Space for Research and Projects—where he presented a piece in the collective exhibition ANTI-PROCESSES [Shared Points].

He participated in an art residency at Tlaxcala3, an artistic center in Mexico City, where his research explored themes of visual poetry, marginal discourse, and decolonial design. This process culminated in the exhibition A.T.E. (Asuntos de un Tipógrafo Experimental).

Cruz is the co-founder of TheyType, a type foundry specializing in high-quality custom fonts, alongside Sarah Auches. He has worked as the lead designer at OTAMI with Cree artist Sebastien Aubin, contributing to projects for notable clients such as the CCA, Postcommodity, Remai Modern Gallery, Art Gallery of Ontario, and Jeffrey Gibson, among others.

Currently based in Montréal, Cruz is working on a range of design projects as an independent designer, collaborating with artists, designers, publishers, and design studios. Recent projects include work with Caroline Monnet, Francis Goodship, Raul Aguilar Canela, Miri Chekanovich, Fomenta Studio, Carolane Bélanger, OTAMI-, Kenny Dorvil, Joyce Jouma, Fonderie Darling, and Concordia Press, among others.
